Crossing over genres in today's movie industry has become a common curse for studios unsure of how to market such films.  There is the Rom-Com-Zom (Shaun of the Dead), as well as live action-animation and the comedic scary movie. More often than not, it is two specific genres that cross borders: Comedy and Romance. Mr. and Mrs. Smith happens to be one of these hybrids films longing to please a wider audience.

John Smith (Brad Pitt) is a hitman who poses as a Contractor. Jane Smith (Angelina Jolie), also a hired killer, runs a temp agency that is a front for the agency she works for. Both seem very well adjusted and feel secure in their jobs, except for one flaw. They once unwittingly used each other as a cover while on a mission and since then fell in love, rushing into a marriage that has lasted 5 or 6 years, depending on whom you ask. Slowly we learn that the marriage is approaching the 7-year-inch, infamous for being when most marriages start to go sour. John and Jane have decided to go to a marriage counselor for a spruce up, but what they discover is that they are each still playing a role.

When the two of them are sent on a mission to take out the same mark, each foil each other's set-up and once they return from their failed attempt, both agents must attain the identity of the other in order to rectify their own mistake. Slowly they realize their new foe is the other spouse and all hell breaks loose. Volleying between love and hate, John and Jane must decide which of them will be the last one standing after 48 hours, or else they forfeit their own lives.
